“About the time we can make the ends meet, somebody moves the ends.” – Herbert Hoover
Hello, welcome to The Finance Journey Blog. This first blog will serve as an overview of what can be expected from these weekly posts and a little about myself. To start off, I am currently a sophomore in college majoring in finance. My name is Denise but for blog purposes, I will go by D, which was actually a nickname given to me by my coach in middle school. I want to go into private equity and will share my story/goals/knowledge as I go, as I have learned that I like the field I’ve chosen more and more. This is for many reasons, 1) Options are plentiful, the fields in finance are (all mostly) interesting and very specific 2) The salaries tend to be a bit better and the demand isn’t diminishing. In a world where technology is taking over, I believe finance is a timeless field that can benefit one’s life the most. 3) I like numbers. Sure, I’ll struggle to write a blog or even economics sometimes but, accounting and business calculus were some of the easiest things for me to learn.
I have been working under a tax attorney for the past year, where I have gained communication/networking skills, learned about tax, created Living Trusts, worked on R&D credits, reviewed cases with my boss, practiced writing quarterly financial review reports, and learned to use excel, probably the most important skill as someone wanting to go into PE. I recently started under Jake, he is in the PE field and gave me a cash proofing project. I am actually on a one month break since school is piling up but will resume the project once I get back. For now, I will study a textbook given to me by another office-mate in PE which contains mostly accounting and excel practices.
This will probably be it for now as it is just an introduction/overview, but next week I will talk about the quarterly financial review as it involved some accounting that can be useful in keeping an eye on the health of any company.
Thank you,
D.
